Focus on Cathcart
Driving northwards on the
Friendly N6 from East London
towards Queenstown, one travels through the little town of
Cathcart. At first sight it appears to be a fairly sleepy rural
town but in fact it is rich in
history with many ’nooks and
crannies’ to explore. Names
such as Waku, Gaika, Tylden,
Goshen and Henderson outline
the eclectic mix that is the heritage of this area.
Long before the Xhosa or European settlers arrived, the San
inhabited the area and today
their paintings lay hidden in the
caves and rocks around the
region. They tell of a time when
the Bontebok Flats teemed with
animals, elephants roamed near
Tylden and hippos wallowed in
the Swart Kei River. (Full article inside)
