Thomas River Historical Village
Thomas River Historical Village is a wonderful place to stay for a day or two (and you'll want to stay for longer) and explore the history of the area, while also enjoying stunning weather, beautiful rolling hills and the company of fascinating people over drinks in the pub and wonderful food in the restaurant.

Thomas River used to be an important station between Cathcart and Stutterheim. The old station platform and buildings have been maintained in perfect order. Near the platform, there still remain four gunners towers - a reminder of the brutal Xhosa-British wars that were fought in this area. The settlement boasts a private library.

The library building was originally built for the use of soldiers but after the fighting ended it was given to the community as a school and functioned for many years before being turned into a private library when the school was eventually closed down. There are still many people in the area who were educated at that little school.

For those who are interested in old vehicles and car memorabilia, Thomas River is a place to lose yourself in the wonder and grandeur of travel in the past. Their collections are extensive and range over many, many years. Thomas River also treasures those tiny signs left behind by the original inhabitants with one of the foremost Rock Art centres in the area.Tours can also be organised to see rock art sites around Thomas River.

After days of exploring the tangible memories of times gone by, wander into the pub or restaurant and visit with those who can tell the tales of the people and moments and experiences that make that past truly meaningful.

Thomas River Historical Village offers self-catering and backpackers accommodation and a variety of modern activities to complement this exceptional heritage experience and create a memories that will last for many, many years.
