Mgwali Mission is unique - the first mission station in the nineteenth century to be governed by a black man, the Reverend Tiyo Soga. The early buildings of the Mgwali Mission are the suriviving structures of what was part of a group of famous black educational institutions on the continent. Ultimately Mgwali is significant as it remains a testimony to the life and work of Reverend Tiyo Soga. See also The History of Mgwali. In Mgwali today there are two main attractions: The Church Traditional Xhosa Culture * You arrive at the village at 11:00am. * You are welcomed and entertained with singing and dancing. * You are the showed the local crafts. * Then taken to the museum at the village centre. * You are then taken to the Sangoma. * Then you are given traditional beer “Umqomboti” and if you go there over the weekend you are welcome to go to their traditional ceremonies. * Then you return for your traditional lunch which is a stew with the following ingredients: 1. Samp 2. Meat or chicken 3. Pumpkin 4. Potatoes * Served with home-made ginger beer and roast bread. * After lunch you sign the visitors' book and there is additional entertainment to follow. |
