Cata Cottages
The village of Cata is nestled in a beautiful crescent in the Amathole Mountains, approximately 50km from Stutterheim

Place of brutal apartheid-era forced removals in the 1960’s, the village now is a thriving model of integrated, community-driven development.

Development initiatives in the village include an agricultural co-operative, a forestry project and a tourism venture.

What to do in Cata

Visit the Cata community Museum

At the heart of the village stands the community museum- unique in South African that it is the only museum that tells the story of rural land dispossession and the community’s successful struggle for restitution.

Inside I Visitors begin their ‘Cata experience’ in the indoor part of the museum, where they will find exhibits of world class standard.

Outside I This is a 20km guided walk along a professionally ‘cut’ heritage trail, featuring information boards and a toposcope. The trail brings one face to face with the devastation of forced removal.

Xhosa lessons for beginners

Live in the community for a weekend or a week, immersed in the language. Let Cata’s selected Xhosa teachers give you an introduction to the language. Lessons follow a professionally developed curriculum, and run for several hours a day. Build your vocabulary and develop your language skills as you interact with Cata residents during the rest of the day.

Conferencing

In addition to the accommodation and wide variety of activities in Cata, there is also a multi-purpose, well -equipped hall in the village. Cata is the ideal locality for conferences, retreats, seminars, and workshops. It offers tranquillity, wonder, a uniquely varied experience and amazing bright stars!

Directions to Cata from Dimbaza

Just after Dimbaza, turn right onto the R352 to Keiskammahoek. Drive into the town, over a small bridge. At the four-way intersection, turn right into the main road that runs through the town. Proceed through the town. At the end of the town you will go over a bridge.

Turn left on the other side of the bridge, just in front of a building with the sign ‘Opstal’ on it. Follow the gravel road. SS Gida Hospital will be on your left. It is 17km from Keiskammahoek to Cata. Keep going straight on the gravel road until you see a sign to the Cata clinic. Turn right. This road hugs the hillside and winds its way to the village- the impressive Cata Dam will be on your right. The Cata community hall is behind the clinic (take the slip-road to the left of the clinic). The tourism office is in the hall.

What Makes Cata different?

Most South African rural tourism products attempt to package the past. At Cata, you will not experience ‘life as it was 100 years ago’. You will visit a 21stCentury rural village, characterised by a vibrant local democracy, and an integrated approach to development.

All enterprises are 100% community- owned and managed. By visiting Cata you not only enjoy an amazing tourism experience, you also contribute to a dynamic, empowering process of local development.
