From Pot Bellied Pigs to Dwarf Goats and an Egyptian Goose called ‘Lucky Duck’, what a wonderful way for children, both large and small, to spend the day. With so many exciting experiences in store, and fun around every corner, little minds are always enthusiastically full of questions about all the animals they can watch, feed and touch.
Sharon and Raymond Haynes moved to Stutterheim almost 5 years ago and have always had a complete menagerie of pets. In July 2008 they decided to extend their family of animals and open their doors to the public, and so the idea of The Birds Nest Touch Farm was born. Snowflake and Boots, the Dwarf Goats are soon to become proud parents for the first time and the Pot Bellied Pigs, Lizzie and Fanie had a litter of 5 little piglets only 6 weeks ago. With such a marvelous mixture of animals, young and old, it is a wonderful experience for little ones to be part of. Tiny faces light up as Spike the Porcupine raises his quills, stamps his foot and dives into his favourite lunch of butternut! Fluffy bunnies and inquisitive hamsters are there to hold and everyone loves to feed the Koi and watch them swim.
A wonderful array of birds, Fantails, Tumblers, Rollers, Owl Doves, Golden Pheasants and spectacular Golden Mantles are housed in large and airy aviaries while the five Emus have a spacious enclosure to run around in. Eno, the large male was hand reared by Sharon and Raymond from 2 weeks old. Now at two and half years, he obediently comes when called and gives an amusing display, dancing and rolling on his back causing squeals of delight. Turkeys gobble excitedly and flaunt their tail feathers to an enthusiastic audience while down at the pond, the ducks and geese glide gently on the water. Four year old ‘Lucky Duck’, an Egyptian Goose, was rescued from a cat at only a few days old and loving children, comes quickly when called by Sharon. Watching this goose, one would think that she was actually chatting to the children as she stretches and bows while cackling loudly to her spectators. Not only does the Touch Farm have an abundance of animals, but the garden is fully equipped to keep children blissfully happy with a jungle gym, swings, slides, seesaw, scooters and push cars, a jumping castle and the favourite, the ‘foofy’ slide. After an exhilarating morning, the tea room can provide a full children’s menu for lunch or snacks and cool drinks in between. The Birds Nest will cater for birthday parties, theme parties and even has a special connection with the North Pole, as for special Xmas parties, a surprise visit by Santa or one of his helpers can be arranged. For only a R5.00 entrance fee for the whole day, it is certainly exceptional value for money, so make sure to take your little ones to the Birds Nest soon!
