Free Wings Art Studio is the home of Coenie Strydom. Coenie is a successful artists in his own right. His sculptures have challenged and intrigued many art buyers and owners, as well as visitors to the studio. Through funding from the EU as part of the eScape Route project, Free Wings has provided an opportunity for several young people from disadvantaged communities in Stutterheim to become artists. Trainees are given expert coaching and mentor ship by Coenie and are able to sell their work through the Studio, providing them with an opportunity to develop their teamwork and business skills at the same time. Coenie Strydom expresses himself in a surrealistic style working in concrete, stone, clay and pencil mixed medium drawings. His unique outlook on life and reality is evident in his art. Part of his philosophy is sharing knowledge, this is evident by the exceptional art that his trainees have been creating.
Free Wings studio is open to the public by arrangement and art pieces are on sale from the Studio. Contact Coenie on 082 356 1439. Raku Fireing
This is a Japanees Fireing Technique. Raku Ware was used in the tea seromony, Raku means "Joyful"Raku is a team effort of at least eight people, steps of doing Raku Fireing includes covering bisked or pre fired vessels with raw materials (glazes, under glazes and wax resist) then pots are fired to a thousand degrees in fourty five minutes under a drum in the Raku Kiln. Then the top section is lifted off, leaving the vesels exposed to the rapid cooling temperature, then long tongs are used to remove each pot and smother it in sore dust left for aproximately five minute... Then it is taken out thrown into a plant of cold water... The work is then cleaned with steal wool revealing the curiosity of the design made. |
