A small but thriving artist community will share with you the fascinating experience of pottery, ceramics, sculpture, hand make silver jewellery and modern embroidery with traditional beadwork.

Approximately ten years ago, Mbonisi Funani avidly wanted to study tourism and applied for a bursary through his local priest. Unfortunately, at that time, Father Maiworm had to explain that there were no funds available but instead, offered him training. Initially he helped out with the printing press, and then when a vacancy arose, moved on to the art of candle making. His work has taken him as far as Rome where he was introduced to the Vatican’s modern candle-making operation. Unlike there, Mbonisi still uses the long-standing methods of moulds and aluminium pipes. Based in a room which was formerly part of St. Mary’s Catholic Church School, Mbonisi supplies most of the Catholic Churches in the Eastern Cape, such as Port Elizabeth, East London, Mthatha, and Aliwal North with altar, baptism, first Holy Communion and giant Easter candles.

Bev Bauer's work is now on display along with the work of a variety of other artists at the Artists' House. The Artists' House is a working gallery where visitors can immerse themselves in the world of a real working artist, enjoy a cup of coffee, chat with Bev and her trainees about what it means to live an artistic life, and perhaps even become part of the artistic process.

The Artists' House is open most weekends and by arrangement during the week.

Free Wings Art Studio is the home of Coenie Strydom. Coenie is a successful artists in his own right. His sculptures have challenged and intrigued many art buyers and owners, as well as visitors to the studio.

Through funding from the EU as part of the eScape Route project, Free Wings has provided an opportunity for several young people from disadvantaged communities in Stutterheim to become artists.

Trainees are given expert coaching and mentor ship by Coenie and are able to sell their work through the Studio, providing them with an opportunity to develop their teamwork and business skills at the same time.

Debbie Wernberg expresses herself in silver, set with shell (paua, abalone and tortoise shell), also in stone and wood.
