Aquascape Fun
People speak about the ‘wow’ factor and after having spent the morning on Wriggleswade Dam, I can definitely say that Aquascape has it. Rob Scott offers an amazing morning or afternoon outing on the water that includes activities from bird watching and fishing to water skiing and wake boarding. He has just acquired a shute so will be starting with para sailing soon.

For the bird lover, it is an absolutely wondrous experience. Drifting in neutral between trees half submerged by water, the birds are not as wary of a boat and the opportunities for photography are phenomenal. We were lucky enough to watch a Lammergeier perch on the boughs of a tree and finally take off above our heads. It was so close to us that we could pick out all the markings on the underside of the wings. Crested Cranes observed us from the shore and displayed their beauty by spreading their wings and dancing. Cormorants floated lazily and a kingfisher perched on a short tree stump eagerly awaiting its next meal. It truly was an incredible experience.

After having motored around the entire dam and viewing the surrounds including a half submerged windmill which gave a glimpse into the past when the dam was still farm land, we tied up to a tree, totally bedecked with weaver nests and enjoyed our picnic. There was something really quite incongruous about sitting tied to a tree completely surrounded by water in the middle of the Wriggleswade Dam. Rob is not only a fountain of knowledge in regards to birds, but also knows all the best fishing spots, ensuring a day well spent. Wriggleswade is well known for its bass fishing and hosts not only local but national competitions.

Luckily the clouds parted and as the sun shone brightly down, it certainly felt quite indulgent sitting on the boat sipping champagne, eating baguettes and fresh fruit with the only sounds being those of idle banter and laughter of four very happy customers. Having finished their picnic, two of the girls decided to try water skiing. With much hilarity they were fitted with skis and given instructions of ‘arms straight and knees bent.’ After several attempts and constant giggling, they finally managed to stand up on their skis. Tired but happy, they climbed back on board deciding to let the ‘pro’ take over.

Starting out on skis, he soon moved on to his personal favourite, the wake board, while still demonstrating how easily it can be done. Spray flying out behind him, it was again the perfect opportunity for photography and I think we were all suitably impressed! A short ride back to the club house and our morning outing was over. Whether it’s birding, fishing, water sports or just enjoying the stunning landscape from the water, Aquascape is definitely a must. I think I want to try the sunset cruise next time!
